FEDERAL STAFFORD LOANS

The federal financial aid system is currently in a transitory stage: “As a result of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, beginning July 1, 2010, federal student loans will no longer be made by private lenders under the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Instead, all new federal student loans will come directly from the U.S. Department of Education under the Direct Loan Program.” – studentloans.gov.

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step in the federal financial aid process. To complete a form online go to fafsa.ed.gov The Academy's school code is 041335.

The Federal Stafford Loan is available to students of the M.Ac. program. As of July 1st, 2007, Loans of up to $20,500 per year are available to cover the costs of training.

The Stafford Loan can be subsidized or unsubsidized. Subsidized loans are based on financial need. The government will pay the interest on your loan while you're in school, for the first six months after you leave school, and during authorized periods of deferment. Depending on your financial need, you may borrow up to $8,500 in subsidized loans.

You might be able to borrow loan funds even if you cannot demonstrate financial need. In that case, you'd receive an unsubsidized loan. Unlike a subsidized loan, you are responsible for the interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. You can choose to pay the interest or allow it to be added to the principal amount of your loan. Interest rates are variable and adjusted annually, but will not exceed 8.25%.

Repayment of a Stafford Loan begins after you graduate. You will have a six-month "grace period" before you begin repayment. During the grace period on a subsidized loan, you don't have to pay any principal, and you won't be charged interest. If you leave school before finishing the program your repayment will begin immediately. During the grace period on an unsubsidized loan, you don't have to pay any principal, but you will be charged interest.
