The Student Experience at the Academy

Small Student-Teacher Ratio

Academy for Five Element Acupuncture is dedicated to upholding a high standard of education, and part of that is a commitment to smaller class sizes. Smaller class sizes allow for more individualized attention for each student and close mentorship throughout their education.

Nature Study

A major emphasis in Five Element Acupuncture is connection to natural cycles. The Academy encourages connection with nature through field trips, journaling, and class projects for students.

Inner Development

Experiential coursework that focuses on developing students’ perceptions of touch, smell, hearing and seeing, and using those senses as diagnostic tools.  Cultivating the Heart, the intuition and the senses of the practitioner are seen as an equal part of the analytical treatment process.

“As a student of the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture, my experience of how to be a healer was beyond surpassed. Not only do they teach and show you how to provide for others, they open our own eyes to take the best care of ourselves. The instructors have provided an unending amount of support both during and after clinic. This program has provided the most excellent role models to aspire towards, as well as a life-long mentors.”

Mari Steinke, graduate

“My time at the Academy was challenging and enlightening. My growth was uncomfortable at times, as change can be… and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Those experiences have molded who I am as a practitioner. Gainesville is a magical place where nature and the city intermingle. My family and I fell in love with both the school and Gainesville during our time here.”

– Mari Steinke, Class 37

“The staff at the Academy is incredibly supportive and encouraging and makes everything seem achievable. They aren’t trying to weed people out here, they want you to succeed. The small class sizes really make you feel like you’re a part of something, with enough spaciousness to make it your own. You’re encouraged to recognize everyone’s individual gifts and role, including your own, which can be really transformative. This isn’t just an education; it’s a lifestyle, a practice, a worldview. It’s a calling, this Five Element work. If you chose to stay with the calling, in time the nature of the work will teach you things deep and wonderful – in yourself as well as all people. Dan Sachs (35-year practitioner) Classical Five-Element Acupuncture provides a framework to enable us to discern and liberate conditions of our physical, mental, and spiritual vitality such that life purposes are more easily fulfilled; whether due to no longer being distracted by a rash, or once again seeing the opportunity of a great future where despair and depression once was. Robie Murdoch (32-year practitioner) Learning the skill of seeing color, smelling odor, hearing sound, and feeling emotion is exhilarating; providing a poetic way to walk in the world that is not just a technique. Susan Weiser-Mason (33-year practitioner) This medicine reminds me of the oneness of all and the connections that we share. As patient and practitioner, it has certainly broadened my horizon and added to my appreciation of life. I am glad to have been called. Chuck Graham (17-year practitioner) It is a true gift to be part of the process of returning someone to their fundamental nature, and to watch them grow and shine. I am filled with gratitude to work in this medicine, in this tradition, at this school, and to continue to learn from my colleagues, students, and patients. Misti Oxford-Pickeral (15-year practitioner)
